The road to building your successful career as a nail tech doesn’t stop after you complete school and obtain your license. That license needs to be routinely renewed to ensure that you can continue your passion legally. By renewing your license in a timely manner, you’re able to advance your career while prioritizing client safety and demonstrating your ability to stay on top of industry trends. Failing to do so can result in the license you’ve worked so hard for going inactive, followed by a challenging reinstatement process.

Although renewing your nail tech license may seem daunting, it doesn’t have to be. In this article, we’ll provide an overview of the process so you know what to expect and can ensure that, when the time comes, your license renewal goes smoothly.

Manicurist License Renewal Process

Every state has its own license renewal requirements, so it’s important to familiarize yourself with yours, but in general, renewing your license is simpler than obtaining it. You won’t need nearly as many training hours — if any — nor do you need to take another exam. And, renewals can typically be taken care of online, speeding up the process.

Keep in mind, state renewal requirements can change at any time, so you will want to check your state’s licensing agency’s website as your renewal date nears. In Indiana, this is the . In Illinois, this is the . And in Wisconsin, this is the .

Indiana Nail Tech License Renewal Requirements

As is the case with most things concerning the renewal of a nail tech license, renewal timing will vary per state. In Illinois and Wisconsin, for example, licenses expire on a specific date every two years, whereas in Indiana, licenses expire every four years.

In order to avoid the penalties of a late renewal or inactive license, you’ll want to begin your license renewal process well before its expiration date. Yes, online renewals are meant to make the process go faster, but waiting until the last minute might result in you realizing you’re missing a key requirement, impacting your ability to practice. Renewal windows typically open up at least a month before the specified expiration date, giving you plenty of time to complete the process.

License Documentation for Manicurists

Key documentation you’ll need to renew your nail tech license includes up-to-date personal information, like your address and residency status, as well as certificates of completion for your continuing education hours.

Continuing education hours are earned by taking state-approved courses designed to keep beauty industry professionals up to date on relevant laws, health and safety procedures, trends, and more. Continuing education hours can’t be obtained overnight, so it’s important to know how many hours your state requires for license renewal well before your license is set to expire.

Keep in mind that some states, like Indiana, do not require continuing education for license renewal, although it’s always encouraged. States like Illinois and Wisconsin, however, do. In Illinois, you’ll need 10 continuing education hours, whereas Wisconsin only requires four.

Nail Tech License Renewal Costs in Indiana

Renewing your manicurist license typically comes with a small renewal fee. As you can probably guess by now, this varies by state too. Certain states’ renewal fees can be as low as $10, but they require licenses to be renewed more frequently. In Indiana, where you only need to renew every four years, the current renewal fee (if done on time) is $40. However, renewing after your license’s expiration date will add a $50 late fee to that amount.

In some states, like Wisconsin, you can pay to make your license inactive instead of renewing, which is helpful if you plan to take a break from practicing but wish to maintain your credentials. Before you make this decision, make sure you’re aware of any additional requirements needed to reactivate your license when that time comes.

Repercussions of Not Renewing Your Nail Tech License

Life can get pretty busy, making it hard to prioritize license renewal, but not doing so can result in consequences that range from a pesky late fee to career-ending legal ramifications, should something go wrong while practicing with an inactive or expired license.

Moreover, in states where CE hours are required for renewal, not renewing your license means missing out on key learning that can further your career, such as the latest laws and safety procedures, as well as new and trending techniques. Should you wish to start practicing as a licensed nail technician again, not only will you face a lengthy license reinstatement process, you’ll have a lot of catching up to do knowledge-wise.

Set Up for Career Success Every Step of the Way

At Tricoci, our goal is to set you up for success as a nail tech by providing you with high-quality training, real-world experience, and comprehensive knowledge of what to expect in your career, and license renewal is a seemingly small but highly important part of the job. With a better awareness and understanding of the process, you can ensure it won’t prevent you from thriving as a nail technician.

Finding the right program to help you realize your dreams of becoming a nail technician is not always easy, especially if you’re trying to juggle the rest of life’s responsibilities alongside your schooling. That’s where night classes come in, and for those interested in nail artistry as a career path, attending evening classes as a part-time student may be the solution you were looking for.

Nail Tech Night Classes for Busy Students

One of the biggest barriers to continued education and pursuing certifications or licensure in a trade is, simply, life. Bills need to be paid, children need to be cared for, the chores won’t do themselves, and sometimes it can feel like a struggle just to fit in all the “have to”s in a given day, which makes clearing time for the “want to”s seem impossible. Even if those “want to”s include following a passion to better your life in the long run.

If traditional class schedules don’t fit with the stack of responsibilities you’re currently up against, you don’t have the time to attend day classes, or you simply find that you’re more receptive to learning in the evening, then nail tech night school might be for you.

It’s important to note that not all nail technician programs will offer night classes or allow students to attend part-time, so finding the right program to fit your schedule and needs is important. At سԹ, we offer a nail technology night school program at our Indianapolis NE campus, and most students can complete the 600-hour training program in just 6 months with a part-time schedule.

For potential students who need to continue working full or part-time while they study, this part-time schedule flexibility can truly make the difference between allowing the space to build a new career path or feeling stuck in the same path you’re currently on.

Enjoy the Benefits of Evening Nail Tech School

At the end of the day, most aspiring manicurist/pedicurists and nail artists choose to pursue a nail technician program because they are ready to turn their hobby into a passion-filled career. If you’re unsure of whether or not nail tech classes might be for you, whether it’s evening nail tech classes at our Indianapolis campus or a daytime program, there are wonderful benefits to night nail tech school and part-time nail tech school to consider. Some benefits include:

  • Schedule flexibility. As a part-time nail tech student, you don’t have to put your life on hold in order to prioritize your education. Investing some time each week is enough to complete سԹ’s nail technology program in just 6 months.
  • Ability to balance childcare. While childcare needs will vary from family to family, night classes offer students the opportunity to better trade off with other caregivers who have a traditional 9 to 5 job, so you can focus on bettering your future.
  • Balance with a full time job. If you currently work full time and are worried about affording school with cut working hours, evening classes offer the chance for you to do both. The freedom to pursue your ideal career while maintaining an existing one is a major benefit for part-time students.
  • Take time to invest in your passions. Sometimes, it’s just not possible to put everything on hold so you can enroll as a nail technology student full-time. At سԹ, we don’t believe that should get in the way of prioritizing your passions and elevating your future. Part-time study options encourage you to say yes instead of putting off your goals of becoming a professional nail technician.

Essential Skills You Learn in Nail School /programs/nail-technology/the-most-important-skills-you-can-learn-through-a-nail-technology-program/ Mon, 12 Jun 2023 14:00:17 +0000 /?p=23749 A nail technology program is a great opportunity if you’re interested in nail tech. What does this type of program actually teach aspiring nail technicians?

The post Essential Skills You Learn in Nail School appeared first on سԹ.

If you love nail art and have wondered what turning that passion for artistry into a career as a nail technician might look like, you’re in the right place. Understanding the skills you will learn in a nail technician program will help you decide whether or not nail school is right for you. Plus, getting an inside look at what the nail tech curriculum might look like can help ease worries and better prepare you for your next steps to becoming a full-time nail technician.

What Skills Do You Need to Be a Nail Technician?

Pursuing a career as a nail technician is about more than just grabbing nail polish and going to town. From salon-specific procedures to application and artistry techniques, anatomy and nail care, and more, becoming a nail technician requires a well-rounded education in all aspects of the job. Let’s take a closer look.

Salon Procedures

While each salon will have its own unique set of rules and guidelines, the basic procedures for nail artistry come from a similar foundation across the board. At سԹ, we teach our nail tech students the ins and outs of these procedures to better prepare you for the business side of the beauty industry. Understanding what to expect in a salon environment can make the difference between starting your career on a strong footing and feeling a little lost.

Nail Care and Anatomy

Just like a painter must understand the canvas they’re working on, aspiring nail technicians must understand how to properly care for and treat nails of all types. Just as any other part of the human anatomy has different concerns, care issues, and types, fingernails and toenails do, too. Knowing how to navigate these differences across the wide range of clientele you may encounter throughout your education and career is crucial to your ability to thrive in the industry.
That’s why a major component of nail technician training is understanding nail care and anatomy as it relates to these things. You’ll learn how to give hand, foot, and calf massages as well as how to properly care for your clients’ fingernails, nail beds, and more while providing nail tech services.

Polish Application and Removal

Of course, while becoming a successful nail technician isn’t only about nail polish application and removal, it certainly is an important component of the job. After all, people love exploring different colors, designs, and polish types when they schedule a manicure or pedicure. Learning the latest and most reliable techniques for nail polish application and safe removal is another critical skill you will learn as a nail tech student.

Nail Artistry

The artistry part of the trade is one of the most popular, and it’s often what attracts nail art enthusiasts to the field of nail tech in the first place. During your nail technician education, you will learn techniques for achieving unique and appealing nail art and nail designs consistently and with quality results in mind.
While you will learn some techniques to complement your foundational skills in a nail technician program, many students choose to pursue additional training and certifications that help them learn more specialized techniques and add more unique designs to their repertoire. How you approach nail artistry after graduation is up to you, but it can be one of the most wide-ranging and varied aspects of the job if you invest the time and effort to continue adding skills to your repertoire.

Sterilization and Safety

Sterilization and safety are especially important in the space of nail art and nail services. Because you are working with parts of the human body that are prone to certain bacterial infections, injury, and see a lot of dirt and grime (under the fingernails can be especially grimy), you’ll learn the necessary steps to maintaining a safe and clean environment for you and your clients. From tool sterilization to sanitation and cleanliness in the services you provide, a quality nail technician program will cover these aspects of the job thoroughly.

How to Know if Nail Art Is a Good Career Choice for You

If the skills detailed in the previous section are exciting opportunities to you, you may very well have what it takes to become an exceptional nail artist in the beauty industry. However, truly finding success as a nail tech is about more than just the curriculum you study. Here are a couple of personal traits that will take you far if you choose to pursue a career in nail artistry.

Interpersonal Care and Education

As a nail artist, your success will depend heavily on your ability to build and maintain a book of clients that trust you and return time and time again for your unique art and care. That means that it’s important to provide encouraging and casual social interactions during your services, as well as offer tips and provide education on how your clients can best care for their hands, skin, and nails between appointments, too. Going the extra mile to provide these personalized services and pieces of information will build loyalty that will earn you not only repeat business, but referrals as well.

A Love of Nail Technology

Loving the work you do is foundational to long-term success in any industry, and nail technology is no exception. Finding long-term success in the beauty industry requires a love of the craft you’re passionate about, and a willingness to stay on the cutting edge of the technology, applications, techniques, and trends within your industry. If you’re naturally curious about where the world of nail art is headed next, you are more likely to find the career fulfilling for years to come.

If you’re interested in taking your passion for nail art from a hobby to a career, you need to understand the role beauty school will play in your journey. From better understanding the job to finding the right nail technician program for you, this article will help you feel more confident in taking the next steps as an aspiring professional nail technician.

Things to Know Before Becoming a Nail Tech

As you explore your options as a passionate nail technician, there are a few things you need to know. Taking your love for all things nail art to the next level requires proper training. Not only do you need to learn the skills required to work in a nail salon environment, but better understanding the business aspects of your craft can help you successfully navigate the beauty industry and grow your book of business.

In most states, you will be required to pass a licensure exam in order to practice your craft professionally. In order to sit for the licensure exam, you will need to complete a nail technician training program at an accredited school.

Additionally, many aspiring nail technicians start to build their social media following before and throughout their training so they’re better prepared to have and keep clients after they graduate and become licensed technicians.

Steps to Becoming a Nail Technician

In order to become a professional nail technician, there are a few critical steps you need to take. As mentioned above, finding an accredited program is the first and perhaps most important step you should take. Here are some other steps you need to become a nail technician:

  • Enrolling in a nail technician program
  • Complete hands-on training and graduate your program
  • Sit for the licensure exam in the state you wish to practice in
  • Become a licensed nail technician
  • Continue to build your book of business in a nail salon, spa, or by opening your own business

While the steps are pretty straightforward, it’s easy to see how critical finding the right program for you can be to your overall success. Because your education and training are the foundation for your career, it’s important to choose a program that trains you fully, allows you to receive hands-on experience while you learn, and can teach you about the beauty industry as well.

Find a Nail Training Program Near You

Finding the right program for you may require some research and exploration. For aspiring nail technicians in Indiana, the سԹ is an excellent choice. Our program (available at our Indianapolis Northeast and Lafayette campuses) provides training in both your chosen trade and the beauty industry at large, offering you the tools you need to succeed after graduation.

Once you have a list of campuses narrowed down, schedule tours so you can see for yourself what current students and instructors do on a normal day. Tours are also an excellent chance to ask any questions you may have before you start the admissions process.

If you choose a سԹ campus, you will have the added benefit of a personal admissions counselor who can help with questions about enrollment, financial aid, working with your current work schedule, and more.

The post Becoming a Nail Tech: Frequently Asked Questions appeared first on سԹ.

]]>
If you’re interested in taking your passion for nail art to the next level, there are likely a number of questions you’ve been pondering to get you there. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about becoming a professional nail technician, and the answers you need to get started.

How Much Do Nail Techs Make?

The answer to this common question is as you might expect: it depends. There are a number of factors that contribute to what you might make as a nail technician including: the market you work in, the types of services you offer, and more. , the average pay in the United States for nail technicians is $21.17 an hour, but this is just an average of reported salaries and may not properly reflect what you will make after becoming a licensed nail tech.

How Long Is Nail Tech School?

The number of hours required to complete a nail technician program at an accredited cosmetology school depends on the state in which you are attending. For example, سԹ offers a full nail technician program in Indiana, as well as basic nails as part of our cosmetology program in Illinois and Wisconsin. In Indiana, 450 hours of training is required.

Do You Have to Be Licensed to Do Nails?

Yes. To legally provide nail technician services as a career, you must have a state license. The deciding factor on whether or not you require licensure is if you are making money on the services you provide. If your goal is to become a professional nail technician and make your passion for nail art your career, then a license in the state you intend to practice is required.

What Do You Need to Be a Nail Technician?

In order to obtain a license to be a practicing nail technician, you must have completed an accredited training course and sit for the licensure exam in the state you intend to offer your services. If you intend to offer services in multiple states, you will likely be required to sit for a license in each individual state.

Do You Need a Cosmetology License to Do Nails?

Not necessarily. While this may vary from school to school, it is most important to complete the most relevant program for your career plans. At سԹ, we offer a nail technician program separate from our cosmetology program. However, many students opt to combine training (for example, a student may pursue training as a nail technician and cosmetologist) in order to widen the range of services they can offer after graduation.

How Do Nail Techs Get Paid?

Nail techs get paid in different ways. Some nail salons may offer salaries or hourly pay, others may offer a pay-by-service model where the nail technicians “rent” their space in the salon and receive payment from their clients directly for each service. Additionally, many nail techs receive supplemental income via tips from their clients. This is why building a good book of business and maintaining an excellent reputation as a nail tech is so important.

Nail technicians and manicurists are in hot demand right now, and as long as people enjoy getting their nails done, that’s going to continue. Because most people don’t have the skills necessary to do their own nails, the experience of going to a nail salon has flourished into something that some people do even on a weekly basis. If you’re interested in potentially being a nail tech or manicurist, the سԹ can help. Here’s what you need to know.

Definition

Nail techs and manicurists do a variety of different jobs. This includes cleaning, trimming and polishing nails on both the hands and feet, painting and constructing beautiful nail art, caring for cuticles and other procedures that are useful for nail health and beauty. Plus, nail techs and manicurists also have to understand similar administrative concepts as cosmetologists, such as how to run a business and how to juggle client requests.

Job Outlook

This is actually one of the fastest-growing specialties in cosmetology. Nail techs and manicurists have been around for a very long time, but nail salon visits have become a more common pastime in recent years. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), cosmetology as a job category will grow around 10% by 2024 — three percentage points higher than the national average. Although the BLS estimate of a $20,000 salary may seem low, this doesn’t take into account tips and commissions, both of which are very common in the world of nail tech.

Requirements

If you’re going to become a nail tech or manicurist, there are some requirements you’ll have to work through first.

Education

To become a nail technician, you need to take a specific nail tech exam. States have individual requirements for how many hours of education you’ll need to have before you can take the nail tech exam, so the amount of time it takes may vary depending on where you live.

At سԹ, the nail technology/manicuring program varies fairly significantly depending on whether you live in Indiana or Illinois. The Indiana program is 600 hours, or six months studying part time. The Illinois program is 350 hours, or four months studying part time. Look into the nail technology/manicuring program to get more information on the requirements you need and education you’ll receive.

Experience

The day-to-day life of a nail tech requires a significant amount of expertise, which you can only learn through hands-on experience. Of course, a nail technology/manicuring program will include hands-on experience on a technical level, but you can’t fully understand a nail technology job until you work in a nail salon.

To help with this, many nail salons offer apprenticeships or entry-level positions. With these positions, you’ll learn more about the ins and outs of being part of a nail salon. Consider applying for one of these positions as you start to prepare for your nail tech exam. That way, you’ll have as many options as possible once you finish your exam.

Skills for Success

On top of education and experience, it’s important to have a certain set of skills that will benefit you as a nail tech and manicurist.

A Creative Mind

Many people come to a nail tech looking for an interesting or creative nail design. You might use latex, UV gel, polish, beads or a variety of other supplies to create these designs, and you need to have creative concepts ready to go.

Fine Motor Skills

Facial makeup definitely requires fine motor skills, but the small size of a nail requires even more precision. You may have to work with tweezers and very small pieces to put together a design, and having good fine motor skills will help.

People Skills

Going to a nail salon is an experience, not a chore. Because you’ll likely spend a decent amount of time with each client, it’s important that you’re able to communicate effectively and provide a pleasant experience so the client comes back.

Marketing Prowess

Many nail techs and manicurists earn a commission on products they sell. Even advertising your nail services above other salons requires an element of marketing. If you know how to market yourself and your services, you’ll be one step ahead.

The Right Beauty Career

Nail techs and manicurists are in demand right now, and if you’re interested, you should definitely pursue a nail technology/manicuring program at سԹ. With the expertise you gain through this program, you’ll be ready to become a successful nail tech.
